“10” Mistakes Mac Users Make!

These are simple things that you can correct!  Please, don’t make these mistakes!

1.  Failure to back up your data.

Please use “cloud” storage such as iCloud, Dropbox which stores your data off site or set up Time Machine which uses an external backup drive attached to your computer.

2.  Failure to update Software.

New updates tweak your system and provide better security.

3.  Failure to Repair Permissions.

Repairing Permissions is a tool to clean your operating system.

4.  Failure to empty the trash.

Please look at your trash can and empty it often.

5.  Failure to ask for help.

Throughout the entire operating system Apple provides “help” menus.  Google and YouTube provide “help” of all kinds.  Use the Safari browser and ask any question in the address bar.

6.  Failure to maintain a healthy amount of free space on your hard drive.

Apple recommends 25% of free space on the hard drive.  If you have a 500 GB hard drive you need to leave about 100 GBs free.  In a word, the operating system needs room to “move and breathe.”

7.  Failure to learn how to use the Apps.

It does take some effort but the Apps are useful when you know how to use them.

8.  Failure to know your Passwords and Ids.

This is a must!   For Mac users there are a minimum of four very important passwords.   There is a computer password,  an Apple Id and Password,  a Network password and an eMail password.  There are many other passwords such as Banking, Amazon and eBay passwords.

9.  Failure to protect yourself.

Scammers are everywhere.  Don’t open eMails from persons you do not know.  Don’t click on a link that you do not know.  Don’t believe that you have won $930,000,000.  No one in Nigeria has any real money to give you.

10.  Failure to Replace old Hardware.

It is better to get rid of something and replace it while it is working than to purchase new when your old machine has died.

You can’t expect a lot from old hardware.  Unlike vintage wine;  when it comes to technology; older is not better.
